We both know the world doesn't work that way.
How true that is. I got a bit of a scare when I received a text from Ayr.
"The catwalkers are gunning for you."
Of course it was due to the fact they can't let things go. I took Tober for a night to test a drug, then released her in the same place the following night. She has no memory of what happened, so I know they didn't get any info from her. However, my being of Pack and also under the employment of Ashagi narrowed the list of suspects for them. I just stood there of the roofs of Midian, pondering what to do next...
And, speak of the devil, Jes the catwalker appeared.
After some idle chatter and some one sided introductions, she told me about a nice high spot in the city where I could read. I don't know why, but I favor high locations when eating, napping, or reading. I was suspicious of her, but I didn't wish to show that. I know Niobe's a good person, so why not the rest of the CWs?
But you didn't fully trust her, did you?
The bitch never gave her name.
Indeed. That should have been the instinct I jumped on. Following someone you just met to the top of the building with no idea who they are - what was I thinking?!
Of course, it was a trick. The moment she extended her hand and introduced herself as Jes was the moment my life changed. She pulled me off the edge of City Hall's roof, both of us plunging down to the street below. I could tell by her grip that she was trying to force me under her to take most of the damage from the fall, so I stabbed her to break free a little.
We crashed into the CW roof, and I promptly became aware of what it felt like to take that kind of damage to one side of my body. My right eye, arm, and ribs were severely injured and/or broken. Being shot at by two more CWs didn't help. In the end, I just let the bullets strike the right side of me; that part of my body was done for.
All because of Tober...
You reap what you sow
Oh shut up!
Adagio was kind enough to give me a new arm and replacement eye, but I'm not fully used to it yet. that attack also brought to the light that I might still be mutating. My blood was discovered by Fluffy to be black. Yes BLACK! It was thicker than normal too with unidentifiable blue cells that neither Fluffy, Adagio, or myself could figure out.
I've been finding trouble all over the place lately. Not just in Midian, but in Levi too. Things have gotten slow at work, so I've been supplementing funds by selling my custom -made drugs to black market buyers in Levi. I'd been doing this since I started commuting there for work. Money talks in this city just like in Midian, perhaps even more so.
Guards are willing to look the other way.
Papers can be easily forged or made legit for the right price.
Supplies are much easier to come by if you are willing to do something in return.
It's a simple system.
I must keep each of these facets of myself separate. My health, my research, my family, my lover, and my mind. I cannot be a weak pushover when so many people depend on me, nor can I be an easy target for those who wish to harm me.
It's certainly spurred a desire to get healthier. I've live longer than a test subject was expected to, so why not extend that a little more?

Simple, but not flawless.

We won't live for very long at this rate.
