Ain't that the damn truth?
Everyone was off to pay their respects to the dead king and queen of the short lived Midian monarchy. I had better things to do. With my jobs at both the MCMC and Ashagi, I hardly got a minute to myself, much less for anyone else. In a rare quiet instant, I ran into Mitka and Iellwen around the corner of the Midian Dark Times building. Mitka had just given birth to her first child, a premature but healthy girl named Claire.
Suddenly, we were flown in different directions as explosives hidden inside the mailboxes nearby went off. I still can't remember anything up to that point. In my memories, there's a dream of a vast never-ending field. I felt both calmness and fear here. But I was not alone and this was not a dream.
It was Adagio's doing if you can believe that. She didn't explain much, only that she had entered my mind in the hopes of relaxing me during surgery.
You married the telepath...don't look at me.
I couldn't recall why I was so scared. Seeing Adagio when I thought my life was over should have helped, not hurt.
No, you know why.
...yeah, I suppose I do. I was terrified that my physical self was in such bad shape that my wife had to use her powers as the only means of calming me. That meant whatever was wrong could not be treated with medicine. I was scared that this might be the only way I'd ever see my wife again...and I became horrified by it. Luckily, Adagio was not willing to give up on me as much as my own mind was.
I remember being chained or attacked my chains, like my own mind refused to accept being at ease for once. Was it that messed up?
We fear uncertainty. We don't know how to relax.
Ah, right. At least my life was not coming to an end anytime soon. Adagio fixed my arm, dressed my injuries, and I awoke in our bedroom in Levi. How I got there I never dared to ask, but Adagio revealed what she had been doing all this time.
She'd made a deal with the devil itself - Ashagi was now in mutual union with the UAC. Our lab is their lab just as their labs are now ours. Both companies now have access to the top minds in the field, all within a decent global radius.
She's trying to kill us.
I knew it! She's after our head, that one!
She's in as much danger as we are.
True that.
I can't think about that right now. Even with Adagio's pampering, I still felt an attachment to work. It started with just the occasional conference over the PDA, but that was not enough for me. With Adagio's blessing, I was transferred back to the MCMC for physical therapy. I would not be able to help patients since my left arm was still not working, but I would be able to watch over the hospital. I care more for others than I do myself. Even if I can't do anything at all, I just wanted to be there.
Life had other plans for me, even now. Again, while talking with Mitka, the MCMC was now the target of an attack. Mitka had just explained that my disappearance from the hospital along with Iellwen's had been noticed, and the Pack was searching desperately for me. Meanwhile, Lani and the other doctors responded to a group that had been dumped unceremoniously in a heap of bloody bodies behind the medical center. Lani identified one of them as Amiya. I'd met Amiya a few times while in Midian, but I did not know her on a personal level.
Suddenly, the "severely" injured were throwing gas canisters and firing point blank at onlookers. Mitka, myself and others in the emergency room started to choke. I only had time to recognize one of the masked thugs as a Dreg I'd come across several months ago. That green hair was unmistakable. The Dregs did this...and they were going to pay for it.
I could only watch in horror as the emergency room ignited
Gasoline bathed over equipment, beds, and some unlucky patients sparked a massive fire. With all the chemicals the MCMC housed, it did not take long for the fire to become an uncontainable inferno. I became, like everyone else, a bystander. Unable to defend my workplace. Unable to help get anyone out alive. I was useless in my state.
Forty-five lives are now extinguished because of that fire. Lani is missing, along with a subject we were holding for treatment. Several hundred staff are now out of work, and I have to explain to Ashagi HQ what the hell happened to their new investment. Did I mention by the way that just a few hours earlier, Dr. Nightfire was murdered?! Murdered! I didn't even know she could be injured to the point of death. It seemed that in one day, Ashagi had received two painful blows at once - one to their administration and one to their wallets.
As soon as my arm is better, I'm going to find Amiya and make her scream...one blood curling, absolutely agonizing yell after the other in respect for the lives she helped destroy.
Are lizard hybrids cold blooded like their animal counterparts?
I don't know.
We should put that question to the test...
